Milan, a city waiting to be discovered

Milan is a city often underestimated or dismissed as a place visited only for work, but the truth is that it has incredible energy. If you are looking for a destination for a weekend getaway or a short break, there are plenty of good reasons to put it at the top of your list.

First of all, Milan has an energy that is unique in Italy. It is a city that moves fast, constantly reinvents itself, and makes you feel instantly at the heart of something big. Going from the historic charm of the Duomo’s spires or the Sforza Castle to the futuristic skyscrapers of Gae Aulenti in just ten minutes creates a striking yet wonderful impression. It is the perfect spot for anyone who loves walking, looking around, and soaking up the international vibes.

If you appreciate style, you are practically in the global temple of fashion and design here. You don't necessarily need a massive budget to shop at luxury boutiques; simply strolling through the Quadrilatero or getting lost among the vintage shops in Brera and Ticinese is an experience in itself. People in Milan pay great attention to detail, so even a casual walk down the street turns into an open-air fashion show where you can pick up a few ideas.

Then there’s the nightlife and the food—after all, the *aperitivo* is a sacred ritual here. Around 6:30 PM, the city shifts gears: people gather along the Navigli canals, at the Colonne di San Lorenzo, or at bars in the Isola district to have a drink, grab a bite, and chat. The culinary scene is incredible: you can go from classic *risotto alla milanese* or a giant *cotoletta* to super-authentic ramen bars or trendy spots serving large sharing platters.

Finally, it’s a culturally vibrant city that never feels dull. There are constant contemporary art exhibitions, cool museums like the Triennale and Fondazione Prada, concerts of every genre, and festivals taking place all year round. Plus, it’s incredibly well-connected: you can arrive by train, get around easily on the metro, and reach anywhere in no time.

A history spanning some 2,600 years

It all began around 2,600 years ago with the Celts, who chose this spot on the Po Valley plain to found a village called Medhelan. Shortly after, the Romans arrived; they immediately recognized the location's strategic potential and renamed it Mediolanum—meaning "land in the middle." The city grew so significantly that, for a time, it became the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Today, we are left with incredible gems from that era that tourists flock to photograph—such as the famous Columns of San Lorenzo, the ultimate evening hangout spot for an outdoor drink.

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Milan came under the control of immensely powerful families like the Viscontis and the Sforzas, who transformed the city into a true capital of art and culture. It was during this period that the landmarks attracting millions of visitors from around the world today came into being: construction began on the massive Duomo, the imposing Sforza Castle was built, and even Leonardo da Vinci left his mark here by painting his masterpiece, *The Last Supper*, in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie. If there is a perpetual line of tourists booking tickets months in advance today, we owe it all to that golden age.

As time went on, Milan came under Spanish and Austrian rule, eventually becoming the soul of the *Risorgimento* and the economic engine of a unified Italy. With the industrial boom of the 20th century, it earned a reputation as the "capital of work"—a city defined by a grey, industrious, and tireless work ethic. However, a true turning point arrived in the 1970s and 80s with the birth of the "Milano da bere" (Milan of the good life) era. The city completely reinvented itself, focusing heavily on fashion, design, advertising, and entertainment. Major fashion designers opened their boutiques, and the *Quadrilatero della Moda* (Fashion Quadrangle) became a must-visit destination for high-end international tourism.

In more recent times, a massive transformation exploded with Expo 2015, which gave the city's image a spectacular refresh. Milan filled up with futuristic skyscrapers like those in the Porta Nuova and CityLife districts, revitalized entire neighborhoods, and turned the *aperitivo* along the Navigli canals into a global trend. Today, people no longer visit just for business or a quick stop at the Duomo; Milan has become a trendsetting capital in every sense—perfect for those seeking contemporary art, events, shopping, incredible food, and an international atmosphere found nowhere else in Italy.
